Influence of Soil Properties on the Performance of Metal Detectors and GPR

چکیده
A lthough landmine clearance employs various techniques, manual demining still accounts for a large part of mine-removal operations. The metal detector is the most common tool used in manual demining. Ground-penetrating radar was studied and tested as a complementary tool to the metal detector, because it can identify buried objects and accelerate operations. As the metal detector and GPR employ electromagnetic techniques, the soil’s magnetic, electric and dielectric properties influence both devices. If the influence is significant, these tools may not provide reliable information and the safety of operations cannot be assured. Studying how soils affect detection and how the detectability of the mines is influenced is important. In this article, field experiment results illustrate soil influence on detection performance.

Ultraviolet detectors based on annealed zinc oxide thin films: epitaxial growth and physical characterizations
In this report, ultraviolet (UV) detectors were fabricated based on zinc oxide thin films. The epitaxial growth of zinc oxide thin films was carried out on bare glass substrate with preferred orientation to (002) plane of wurtzite structure through radio frequency sputtering technique. The structural properties indicated a dominant peak at 2θ=34.28º which was matched with JCPDS reference card N...
متن کاملSoil Characterization for Evaluation of Metal Detector Performance
There is a need for understanding how certain soils adversely affect the performance of metal detectors used in demining. This paper discusses the relevant soil electromagnetic properties that influence detector performance and includes possible methods of measuring these properties. Data from preliminary experiments are used to relate detector performance to soil properties. The results establ...
متن کاملDetection of metallic and plastic landmines using the GPR and 2-D resistivity techniques
Low and non-metallic landmines are one of the most difficult subsurface targets to be detected using several geophysical techniques. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) performance at different field sites shows great success in detecting metallic landmines. However significant limitations are taking place in the case of low and non-metallic landmines. Electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) technique ...
متن کاملPerformance of purslane (Portulaca oleracea) in nickel and cadmium contaminated soil as a heavy metals-removing crop
Specific plants can remove heavy metals from the soil and contribute to pollution remediation in cropping systems. Determining the level of highest heavy metals that a super-accumulator crop can withstand without reducing its yield is important for management. The objective of this study was to investigate the heavy metal-removing capacity of purslane by studying different stress criteria and b...
